Members of Strasburg Community Library, Inc. and area volunteers staff and perform all tasks and function to operate the library.  If you would like to volunteer or are interested in membership, please inquire at the desk during open hours.

All expenses for the building, including utilities and maintenance, are borne by our not-for-profit organization.  A portion is raised by the on-going sale of second-hand books.  You will find a selection of these in the bookcase on the porch.  We gladly accept donations of books.  We do not accept magazines textbooks, encyclopedias and dictionaries.

Our mission is to provide resources and services in response to the needs of our changing community.  This can be accomplished by providing access to a balanced collection of books and other materials and programs, which will meet their educational, cultural and recreational needs.

Our goals are:

To continue to provide a large collection of popular current adult fiction.
To focus attention on strengthening our collection of books for young readers.
To expand our audio collection to meet the growing needs of our commuters.
To provide additional adult programs for enrichment in the arts and other areas.
To continue to provide a meeting place to non-profit organizations.
To continue children’s pre-school story time to promote life-long learning and a love of books.
To continue our Summer Reading Programs, and encourage young children to develop an ongoing interest in reading and learning.
To continue building our special collections of cookbooks, gardening, and local history.
To continue recruiting and training volunteers to staff our library, serve our community and enable us to offer additional evening hours.
To make patrons aware of available library services, programs, and shared resources.
To assist patrons in using educational software.

The Strasburg Business Women's Club, organized in March, 1958, decided on a community library as its first project. Accordingly, in 1959 the Strasburg Community Library was opened in the Morrison building on East King St. Ours was the first public library in Shenandoah County. The 500 volumes were contributed by citizens, cataloged and prepared for circulation by Bernice Orndorff, Virginia Bailes, Frances Wharton and Elizabeth Riddleberger. Since that time, many business women and others have volunteered many hours of service.

The library is now in its fourth location. In 1991, the residence of one of our charter members, Ellen Crawford Hatmaker, was deeded to the club by her son, David J. Hatmaker, Harrisonburg attorney. The building is ours as long as it is used for a library or cultural purposes.
Since moving, our library has grown surprisingly. We sponsored the Koo Koo News, a unique, national award-winning publication put out by school children. We also offer copier and Internet service to our patrons and have recently become part of the Shenandoah County Library System, with interlibrary loan privileges and other benefits.

The Library has extensive holdings of current Popular Fiction, Juvenile Books, and Audios.  It's Signature Collections are:
Cookbooks, Gardening, and Local History.
